Solestar Neutral Hike – Stabilization Delta up in the Mountains

In this article I will share my thoughts about the Solestar Neutral Hike Insoles that I use in combination with the Hanwag Alverstone II GTX and Hanwag Ferrata II GTX. The Solestar Stabilization Delta keeps the feet firmly locked into a neutral position, which is beneficial during high tours.

Solestar Neutral Hike – Key Features

On the Solestar Neutral Hike product page you can read the following description with outlined features:

The Solestar Neutral Hike insole with a comfortable cushioning layer ensures that your feet feel good on long walks and hikes. The 3 mm thick cushioning layer gives the foot lasting comfort, while the patented design keeps the foot in a relaxed position.

Like all our insoles, the Neutral Hike has a torsion-resistant shell to protect the foot from overload. This allows the muscles to be used for longer and in a healthier way, resulting in an overall more comfortable walking and hiking experience.

  • maximum cushioning, thicker PU foam with PU upper material
  • 4mm thin in the forefoot area
  • 83g per pair in size 42

The red surface material of the Solestar Neutral Hike is comparable with the Solestar Neutral Run, but has a perforated surface (where the Solestar Neutral Run has a grippy but closed red surface material).

The Solestar Neutral Hike is more aimed at comfort and more cushioning like for example the Solestar Kontrol insoles, that are more optimized for stiffness and power output, while putting the knee and foot in a optimal position.

I’m running two different pairs of hiking shoes Hanwag Alverstone II GTX and Hanwag Ferrata II GTX (with two sets of Solestar Neutral Hike insoles). The last pair of insoles I’ve purchased was (in size L) given all my Solestar Kontrol cycling insoles were in 43. I needed to modify these a bit, for a good fit in the shoes. I simply took out the original Hanwag insole, and put it on top of the Solestar Neutral Hike, and draw the contour on it. I used the Park Tool SZR-1 Scissors to shorten the nose section of the Neutral Hike insoles to perfectly fit the Hanwag Hiking shoes.

The Solestar Active – Performance Insoles for Everyday Life I use in size M with size 42 Mammut Sertig II Low GTX Men in size 42.

Hiking (High) Tours can be demanding for the feet and ankles (constant compensation to stabilize). For my idea this is exactly where the Solestar Stabilization Delta delivers value.

Solestar Stabilization Delta – Also for trekking shoes with tons of support

What I personally feel most with all Solestar Insoles, also with the Solestar Neutral Hike insoles, is the stabilization delta. The Solestar Stabilization Delta basically locks your foot into a neutral and firm position. I’ve started with Solestar Kontrol BLK Cycling Insoles in combination with Sidi Wire SP shoes and expanded the collection since 2015.

While I don’t have any foot or stabilization issues (confirmed during Bikefitting Bioracer Motion at Golazo Energy – Bakala Academy) I will not do any sports or exercise related activity without the Solestar Performance Insoles (hike, run, mountain- , road- or gravel-bike)

Concluding thoughts and wrap-up

The price point of a pair of Solestar Neutral Hike insoles is € 45,00 which is not cheap (just like the Solestar Kontrol cycling insoles). However the insoles are high quality and once you are fully used to the Solestar Stabilization Delta you don’t want anything else during exercise. So for me it is a fair price point and a long term investment.

  • Would you purchase a pair of aftermarket insoles for your hiking shoes ?
  • Do you think the price point is reasonable ?
  • If you are using a different brand of insoles for your hiking shoes let me know in the comment section below.
