In this article I will share some quick thoughts about the Base Line Capped Titanium Pen from Big Idea Design which you could use as an Everyday Carry Pen. Especially helpful when traveling and you would like to travel light and compact. For comparison I will include a picture of another quality product the Rotring Rapid PRO ballpoint.

The mechanical engineer in me has a big smile from ear to ear when I look at the details that are precision CNC-machined. The angles of the cap to the pen body, the lines that are machined on the front part and provide a nice grip. It just shows the quality and focus to detail and design that has been put into this Everyday Carry Pen from Big Idea Design.
The Base Line Capped Titanium Pen has “closed” a length of 10,9 cm and with the cap attached on the back a total length of 14,2 cm. The front part with grip has a diameter of 0,9 cm and the pen body has a diameter of 1,1 cm. It is a comfortable diameter and I prefer to use this titanium pen with the cap attached. The total weight is around 35,7 grams.
When you remove the cap from the back of the pen, you hear a clicking “pop” noice. When you open and close the pen with the cap you also hear a solid click, so you know it is closed properly. A very important aspect are the refills (and their compatibility).
The Base Line Capped Titanium Pen comes with a black Schneider Gelion 39 gel refill. While this is an great excellent refill, I’ve tested a couple of other refills as well:
- Schneider Gelion 39 gel refill
- Parker Jotter Gel refill
- Schmidt Easy Flow 9000 refill
The Westcott E-733496 00 G2 Gell Pen Refill is slightly wider at the tip and doesn’t. fit as well as the other refills above. But with the Parker (Jotter) refill design there are a lot of good and solid options available.
Refilling is easy, just unscrew the front part, put the new refill on the spring and through the tip and simply screw the Baseline Capped Titanium Pen back together.
Concluding thoughts and wrap-up
The price point of the Big Idea Design Base Line Capped Pen in color Raw Titanium was around € 69,00 which is certainly not cheap. However shape, length and design quality combined with a lifetime warranty make it a solid longterm investment for an Everyday Carry Pen.

The Rotring Rapid PRO ballpoint with a Schmidt Easy Flow 9000 refill is always on my desk and a solid workhorse. However with a smaller diameter, you need to squeeze a bit more, that could result in less comfort for long writing sessions. However both are good quality pens, with the Rotring Rapid PRO ballpoint having the price point advantage. What do you think, let me know in the comment section below.
